What to expect from your massage and myofascial treatment in Weston Super Mare
Your first appointment with me is 1.5 hours, this is so that we have enough time to do a thorough consultation and postural assessment with plenty of time left for your first treatment. I will ask you about pain, discomfort and conditions you’re currently experiencing and also about what has happened to your body in the past. Whilst it may not seem relevant to the pain you’re currently experiencing, often injuries, operations or accidents in the past can influence what you feel now. Exploring all of this can provide more insight as to how the treatment can help you with natural pain management.
A key part of this initial appointment and the rest of your appointments is how I listen to you. I use my background as a life coach to get to the crux of what’s going on for you, rather than making assumptions. This means that I’m able to get a deeper understanding of your needs so that your session is more beneficial.
After finding out what your main focus is for your treatment I use my knowledge, skill and experience to work out a plan that is best for you and your body. Every treatment is unique and tailored exactly to your needs.
How I Work
Each treatment is different, and will probably be different each time you see me depending on how your body responds and what you feel you need. I usually treat with a combination of myofascial release, deep tissue and holistic massage, trigger point therapy, stretching, mobilisations and muscle energy techniques. Depending on what you want to achieve from the session I tend not to do a full session of general massage with oil. All treatments are carried out with the intention of allowing your mind and body to achieve deep relaxation.
My aim is to get to the cause of what it is you’re experiencing, rather than treating the symptoms so that you are able to live your life without discomfort and create a more resilient body. This means that sometimes I may not work on the area where you feel pain, however, I will always explain this to you so you know why I’m treating in a particular way.
At the end of your appointment I will often give you stretching, strengthening or fascial exercises for you to do between sessions. When you take an active part in your treatment you’ll find you get results much faster. I use my background as a personal trainer to pick the exercises that will allow you to reach your goals more quickly.
How You Might Feel
During the treatment you might feel different sensations in your body. I will ask you to explore these so that you get a better understanding of what’s going on in your body. There will be lots of shifts in your body during the treatment and you might feel very relaxed and sleepy afterwards. Sometimes there may be an emotional element to the treatment and feelings arise that you weren’t expecting. All of this is perfectly normal.
Fascial changes can continue for up to 72 hours after treatment and in that time you may feel new sensations, be stiff or achey but this will settle. After 72 hours you should feel less pain, a feeling of lightness, more mobility and ease.
At your next appointment I will ask all about what you’ve been feeling and experiencing and will adjust your next treatment accordingly.
I will always welcome you to my studio, and listen to you without judgement. The studio is a safe space for you to say what you like, work out how you feel and how you want to feel. My values are the core principles within which I operate to provide a genuine and effective service for all my clients. These are:
If I don’t know something, feel I am the right therapist to help you or need to refer you to an alternative practitioner I will discuss this with you.
I adhere to the Code of Ethics for both the Massage Training Institute and Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council.
If you’re not sure if the way I work is right for you then please get in touch and I’m happy to discuss any questions you have.
